October Enjoys TWO Birthstones, Tourmaline and Opal, Both Spectacular – The Pink Pigs

October Enjoys TWO Birthstones, Tourmaline and Opal, Both Spectacular Gems!

Uniquely, October babies have the option to wear two gemstones symbolizing their birth. Both opal and tourmaline have lovely qualities--and plenty of potential for a gleaming and symbolic accessory!

Opal

This subtle and glittering stone has a surprising range of qualities. Rather than being classified simply as a mineral, its non-crystalline structure makes it a mineraloid. Opals are treasured for their cool tones and inner glints of all visible colors. One may hold a piece of opal in their hand and, with a turn in the light, see every color of the rainbow hidden within.

Opals represent trust, faith, fidelity, passion, and purity. They have been historically used for their healing properties and valued for their fiery, almost floating inner colorations. Opals are commonly used as a channeling tool for meditation and healing.

Despite their beautiful and vibrant colors, opals were once considered a stone of bad luck. This is because the stones are soft and easily cracked during the shaping and refining process. As such, their fragility became a kind of omen. Nowadays, it is considered a symbol of human passion and friendship. Not so unlucky, if you ask us!

Caring for Your Opal Jewelry

As aforementioned, opals are comparatively soft. Avoid wearing your opal pieces during any dirty work, sports, or other hazardous activities. It is easily scratched with dirt particles and won’t stand up to blows without cracking.

When cleaning your opal jewelry, never use harsh chemicals. Instead, use a soft toothbrush and mild soap to gently scrub any dirt off your jewelry. Rinse it under hot water and repeat if necessary. If your opal seems to be losing its polish, take it to an experienced jeweler. They will be able to bring the shine back in the right way, without damaging the stone.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is one of the most colorful of all gems. Some may have an assortment of colors in one stone. Others may be a solid color on their own. Pink tourmaline is a popular choice among October babies. Its rich, rosy hues are favored in jewelry and gifts.

Tourmaline, due to its tall, straight striations and prism form, is used as a strong channeling tool for energy. Its different colors often associate different meanings; black tourmaline represents facing fears and creating positive change. Pink tourmaline reflects love and relationships, a symbol of compassion and balance. Green tourmaline represents vitality, healing, and vigor of life.

Caring for Tourmaline Jewelry

While tourmaline is harder than opal, caution should still be exercised. Like many stones, tourmaline isn’t impervious to a scratch, chip, or crack. Avoid rigorous activity or dirty work, such as gardening, while wearing tourmaline.

Soak the piece in a mild solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid. After 15 minutes (or longer if there is excessive grime), use a soft toothbrush or a soft cloth to wipe away dirt. Rinse the piece with warm water and repeat if necessary. With a soft, dry cloth, wipe away all leftover water and store it safely.
